Los Angeles to Las Vegas Drive: Top 10 Road Stops

Las Vegas is a place that needs no introduction. It’s a popular getaway that’s filled with entertainment, clubbing, casinos and music. Fortunately, it is only a drive away for those living in LA! However, it can take you about 5 hours to reach the destination. Luckily, there are a lot of cool pit stops and roadside attractions that you may want to stop by to explore, have a bathroom break or just stretch your legs. Let’s make this road trip journey just as fun as being in Vegas. Here are some of the coolest road stops that you shouldn’t miss out on!

1. Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch

Elmers-Bottle-Tree-Ranch

Address: 24266 National Trails Hwy, Oro Grande, CA 9236

This is a quick stop along route 66 in the middle of nowhere. It is Elmer’s decade old collection that turned into an art exhibit which is filled with glass bottles, antique signs and metal decorations. Unfortunately, the owner Elmer passed away about 2 years ago. The exhibit has been closed and I don’t really know if they will ever reopen again. But even from outside of the fence, there was plenty to look at as we were able to see his most of his works of art. You can tell that Elmer had so much much passion for his forest of treasures.

2. Peggy Sue’s Diner

Peggy Sues Diner

Address: 35654 Yermo Rd, Yermo, CA 92398

Start the day with some breakfast at Peggy Sue’s. It is apparently the oldest diner on freeway 15. This place is a lot bigger than it seems. There’s a cute retro shop, 50s themed diner and a pizza shop. This old school diner was built in 1954 which kept that 50s vibe with its old school music and waitresses in their cute uniforms. Time travel with some basic breakfast place in this relaxed vibe full of nostalgic presence around. You’ll see lots of photos and decor of Elvis Presley. Apparently, there is mini dinosaur park behind that I didn’t get to check out. For the ladies, you may want to check out the women’s restroom for a laugh. An unexpected cowboy  startled me when I came in.

3. Liberty Sculpture Park

Liberty Sculpture Park

The Liberty Sculpture park is a tribute to remember and honor the lives that were lost back in 1989 when the students in China led a protest to demand a democratic rule, freedom of speech and the end of corruption in their country. The big numbers 6 and 4 represents June 4 which was when Tienanmen Square Massacre happened. China’s military fired their weapons with riffles and tanks started firing into the crowds of the protestors which killed around thousands people. An unforgettable moment during this history is when a man who everyone started calling Tank man stood right inferno of the tanks as they were leaving the square. His identity was unknown but he became a huge symbol of freedom, bravery and defiance. You can just drive by and do some off-roading at the park to see all of the sculptures sculptures. It is also located next tot the 15 freeway.

4. Eddie World

Eddie World

They claim to be largest gas station in California. Might as well get some gas here while you are at it and do your bathroom break. You can charge your Teslas too and hang out inside while you wait for you car to be fully charged. I imagined the largest gas station in California to have more gas pumps but it is what it is. While you wait for it to charge, this place is a great place to kill time with lots of choices of snacks and drinks.

5. Calico Ghost Town

Get ready to travel back in time and explore what used to be a mining town back in 1881. Not too long after that year, the town was deserted/abandoned in the mid-1890s after silver lost its value. You can imagine this place had so much life back then with its 1200 residents. It’s interesting as you get a glimpse the way of life in the old times.

Some recommended  attractions are Maggies Mine, the train ride and Mystery Shack. We didn’t get to try it as mostly everything was closed when were there. I didn’t mind it as it was empty and refreshing to walk around.

They have restaurants and some gift shops with quirky items. They have a campground here too incase you wanted to stay longer. Check out the cool caves and take in the scenery of this charming western styled town. You can easily spent 2 hours here.

6. Lake Dolores Waterpark

Dolores Lake Park

I don’t know about you but I love abandoned places. The Dolores Lake Park used to be a water theme park. It’s full of graffiti now. You can’t help but imagine how it looked like when it was operating and was a hot spot back in 1999. There is the lazy river and some slides that used to be for the pools. It was closed due to a law suit when an employee got paralyzed after crashing at the high slide. The took off the big slides as they were dangerous in the first place and caused the waterpark to close. There are talks that someone bought it and will reopen one day but people have been saying that for years and so far, nothing has changed.

7. The World’s Tallest Thermometer

You can easily see the ‘World’s Tallest Thermometer’ by the free way miles away and it supposedly accurately tells you the weather temperature. The highest temperature ever recorded on this thermometer was 134 Fahrenheit back in 1913. Yup, thats crazy hot! Anyways, this is just a fun quick stop and a smart way to get people to their gift shop.

8. Alien Fresh Jerky

Here’s a funky alien themed beef jerky store. If you are obsessed with aliens, Area 51 and UFOs then then you’ll love this place. The building is like an alien tank with a space car parked right infant of it with an alien chilling inside. Inside the tank or store, there are lots of alien merchandise and decor with a wide variety of flavors of beef jerky so you’ll get some great snack treats for the road. Lots of hot sauce with funny labels on it as well. Apparently, they are building a hotel in the back so that would be interesting.

9. Bonnie and Clyde’s Death Car used in series of crimes

Bonnie and Clyde’s Death Car used in series of crimes las vegas

At Whisky Pete’s Hotel, you’ll find small open museum with memorabilia collection on display from the notorious criminal couple Bonnie and Clyde. The death car where they were shot was in there and you can visibly see the bullet holes that went through the car. Evidently, there were over 100 bullets shot at the car. It’s a free exhibit with some news paper clippings, jewelry and even the shredded clothing worn by Clyde. Get up close and personal with their fascinating story.

10. Chevron /Terrible’s Road House Pahrump

Chevron :Terrible’s Road House Pahrump

Terrible’s Road House is the more interesting gas station and worth visiting for another gas stop. It is thhe largest Chevron station in the world and they have 96 gas pumps. Yup, you heard that right. Inside, there are shops, restaurants, souvenirs, a life size Sasquatch/big foot,  a Red Bull lounge section, a food court featuring the White Castle, great snacks, soda fountains, stuffed toys and even a beer cave. I could go on with that list! This place has almost everything. It’s crazy huge and kinda feels like a warehouse theme park. Did I mention they have clean restrooms? It’s well decorated inside with airplanes hanging from the ceilings to vintage car exhibits. You can feel that you are getting close to Vegas as they a mini casino and a Las Vegas sign photo booth in candy land. Everything is over the top here. Gas up as you’ll get one more hour left before you reach the Vegas Strip.
